Destination New Zealand
One of the world's biggest travel publishers - Lonely Planet - has named New Zealand as the top travel destination for the year 2003. Lonely Planet, which publishes 650 guidebooks in fourteen languages, surveys its staff annually to discover the travel 'hotspots' for the year.
Don George, Lonely Planet's global travel editor, said, "New Zealand was the grand winner this year, boosted by its breathtaking cinematic appearance in the 'Lord of the Rings' films."
George Hickton, Chief Executive, Tourism New Zealand, said, "People are looking for authenticity and New Zealand's interactive style of tourism, as well as the world-class food and wine, pristine landscapes and the variety of activities which make New Zealand a favourite destination. Last year, for the first time the number of international visitors hit two million and this year we expect it to increase further."
The perception of New Zealand as a safe place, which is more important now than a few years ago, is another drawcard. The Indian tourism market into New Zealand has seen phenomenal growth in recent years and India is now recognised as a power market holding great promise for New Zealand.
