The Thiruuvanmiyur Bus Depot is
a huge landmark for everyone who has "bussed" it through the lanes of Chennai.
It could mark either the culmination or the beginning of a fascinating journey through the
bustling metropolis. "Adyar Bakery "and "Hot Breads", the ubiquitous
signs mark their presence here as well - with cakes, pastries, freshly baked bread,
samosas and pizzas.
 Saree shops with colourful samples fluttering in the breeze catch
the eye of many a lady passing by. Staddling the road on both sides are shops young and
old, big and small, selling everything from glass bangles and uniform, to pencils and
pipes. The once-famous "Jayanthi" and "Theyagaraja" theatres are
things of the past. "Murugan Stores" is a familiar landmark to every housewife
in the locality. Its gleaming array of stainless-steel ware dazzles them from the outside,
and once in, your mind reels with confusion for the choices are so amazing. An impressive
new monolith is the "Mitsubishi Motors" showroom gleaming in the sunshine and
displaying its coveted Lancer breed.
Further down the road is "Adyar Ananda
Bhavan", the glass windows of which show case a tempting range of colurful
halwas,
laddoos and burfis. T.T. Ranganathan Clinical Research Foundation is a habilitation centre
for recovering addicts. "Domino" is the latest landmark for take-away pizzas.
There's also "Chill Thrill" which serves a fruity combination of ice-creams at
fairly reasonable rates to satisfy the summer crowd.
En route to Gandhinagar is the Ambika Appalam
Depot, which has been around for years now. Another Chennai favourite, it continues to
trade in quality appalams, vadams, chips and

 'podis'.
Gandhinagar is what you will
recognise as a posh, upmarket area. Again a predominately residential locality, it is a
home to a couple of Chennai's good schools - Vidya Mandir and St. Michael's.
"Odyssey" is a bright neon here -
the shop that sells books, music games, cards, chocolates, stationery and so on.
"Pantaloon" opened not too long ago and is a place to visit for the clothes
freak.
"Foodworld" witnesses much traffic, and is a shopper's paradise.
"Hot Breads" has not let down its clientele and serves quality samosas, puffs,
cakes, doughnuts and fresh bread.
 "MGM Star City" tempts the young and old alike with a
range of computer-simulated games. It's fun if you're the sort who likes chucking rings
into an arena and winning points, or racing your car at a mad pace manouevring a steering
wheel past a variety of obstacles. "Mischief Kitchen" and "Cozy Dhaba"
invite you to chill out with cokes, ice creams and a Tandoori fare. At the Adyar-Besant
Avenue junction is the Aavin roundabout - a tiny outlet sitting in the middle of a little
grassy patch, selling flavoured milk and ice creams. As you get on to the Thiru Vi Ka
bridge, you will see Malar Hospital, a reputed private hospital in this part of the city.
Adyar and its neighbourhood have appreciated
in value over the years, and those who live in the other side of the city often cast a
longing eye on the development of this area in good-old Chennai.
