Since the very beginning, diamonds have been linked to legend and romance. The sparkle, uniqueness, indestructibility makes them the eternal symbol of love – the ultimate seal on the promise of marriage. Today, no engagement is complete without a diamond. The myth that you have to be rich to buy a diamond has also been broken. In an effort to assist young couples to arrive at a budget for that special engagement ring, diamond promotion services suggest that a ring is worth the money spent. It also helps to know that you can start buying a good quality diamond at Rs. 20,000. Prices are cheaper than ever with the influx of mass produced diamond jewellery, although the quality of the stones may leave something to be desired. In fact, a cheap diamond and special discounts are better avoided as this could prove costly in the long run.
To understand the difference between diamonds, it is necessary to understand the four Cs - cut, clarity, colour and carat weight.
Cut: A good cut brings out more sparkle. When cut to good proportions, a diamond is able to handle light better, creating more brilliance and more sparkle, and therefore commanding more value. When choosing a diamond, one needs to hold it up to see how light dances around it.
Clarity: Perfectly clear diamonds are a rare find. Most diamonds contain very tiny inclusions that make each diamond unique – just like nature’s fingerprints. Even though they neither mar its beauty nor endanger its durability, the fewer and smaller the inclusions are, the more the diamond will sparkle.
Colour: Diamonds come in a wide range of colours. Graded from
colourless and very rare
right through to Z. There are some diamonds with very strong pure colours, like blue or pink, which are extremely rare and called “fancies”. Famous for their high quality, most diamonds in India are in the colour range from F to K.
Carat weight: The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat is divided into 1090 points, so that a diamond of 0.75 carats is 75 points. Carat is the easiest of the 4 Cs to determine.
