A clear and beautiful skin
is a blessing. But not all of us are lucky enough to be blessed with a
blemishless skin. Acne, pimples, freckles - the list goes on. Even if
you don't have a perfect skin, if you take good care of the skin you
have, then you will look and feel better. Eating plenty of fresh fruit
and vegetables, getting regular exercise and lots of fresh air and
sleep are all important if you want healthy skin.
The
golden rule in skin care is "keep it clean"! Each day, the skin faces dirt,
germs and all sorts of nasty things. You need to wash these away. Washing prevents any
infections from developing and gets rid of all the grease and dead skin cells that build
up.
Cleaning your face needs special
care. The skin on the face is thinner and more delicate than the
rest of the skin. It dries out quickly because it is exposed to the
elements all day. Washing it frequently will irritate the skin and
cause more problems.
Steaming:
To give your skin a deep clean, fill a large bowl with hot water - make sure it is not
boiling. Cover your head and the bowl with a towel, lower your face over the steam,
keeping it at least 30 cms above the bowl. Remember, steam can burn so test the distance
first. After about 10 mins, you'll find that the steam has opened the pores of your skin,
leaving it clean and elastic. Take off the towel, wash your face reall well and splash it
with cold water. This will close the pores again
Cleasers:
Cleansers contain a mixture of oil and water. They are gentler on the skin of your face
than soap and are particularly helpful to people with dry skin. Massage a little cleanser
onto your face and nexk with clean fingers, cotton wool or a tissue. Wipe the cleanser off
thoroughly.

Face scrub:
Face scrubs are very fine, gritty cleansers that you rub gently on your face. They take
skin cleansing a step further. Not only do they get rid of the dirt, but they scratch off
all the dead skin cells as well. This process is called exfoliation. It leaves your face
feeling smooth and fresh. Treat your face gently, though - your face should feel fresh and
tingly after a scrub, not red and sore.
Toners:
A
skin toner is usually made up of diluted alcohol mixed with water and a thick liquid
called glycerine. You can use it after cleansing your face, to take off any last traces of
firt or grease. Soak a piece of clean cotton wool with toner and pat it gently over your
face and neck. It should leave your face feeling fresh and tingly. Toners are best for
people with oily skin.
