The elephant toy
Photos Page
This is part of a conversation I had with a three-year-old when I called on his family November 16 (Sunday):
“Why are you here?”
“I came to see you.”
“Oh.”
Then we went inside the house and the little one continued to chat non-stop.
Since he was skipping around, I pointed to a chair behind me and said, “Come, sit here.”
“No, I won’t sit behind you.” He then pulled up a chair, saying, “I will sit only in front of you.”
“What is your name?”
“Sudarshan. What is your name,” he asked without a pause.
“Chitra.”
“Oh.”
“Which class are you studying in?”
“LKG.”
He jumped off the chair and came running back to me.
“See, see this elephant.”
He thrust a slightly out-of-shape plastic elephant at me.
“Is this your elephant?”
“Yes. Did you see Sun TV?”
He kept on pestering me as I was talking to someone else, rolling on the ground all the time.
“I am asking you…Did you see Sun TV? They showed all those elephants.”
“Oh that…. Yes, I saw it.”
“Yes, they showed people beating and beating the elephants. But the elephants were very stubborn. And they started making a big noise.”
“Yes, poor things, isn’t it?”
“Yes, and they kept on beating the elephants.”
“Did the elephants get into the lorries and go to the camp?”
He got impatient with me and simply threw away the elephant and ran into the courtyard leaving me to pick up the poor, battered elephant.
Did somebody call the TV the idiot box?
