Child Abuse

Photos Page

Child Abuse is far more prevalent than Indian society has been willing to acknowledge. It is a universal problem that occurs across all religious, ethnic, occupational and socio-economic groups and is most often perpetrated by someone known to the child. Consequently besides also being denied and ignored, it has frequently gone unrecognized and its victims (both children and perpetrators) untreated or wrongly treated.

The visible and invisible scars of past child abuse usually prevent many people from achieving their optimal potential as the implications of the physical, developmental, social and psychological effects of Child Abuse, and their associated economic cost are significant, usually resulting in trauma with implications across the lifespan.

It is against this background, that The Indian Council for Child Welfare, Tamil Nadu (ICCW – TN) and the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC), a Deemed University, have come together to organise the First National conference on Child Abuse for Multi-disciplinary Professionals (COCAMP 2004) from February 11th to 13th 2004 at SRMC, Chennai.

The theme of 'Issues of Effective Interventions' seeks to bring together doctors, lawyers, social workers as well as appropriate Government officials and other allied disciplines like education and the media in a non-traditional symposium cum workshop style conference format.

The main objectives of the interaction are to sensitize and build capacities of people who come into contact with abused children and to discuss and plan together effective interventional and localized strategies to combat Child Abuse. Among the more important outcomes envisioned are the developing of uniform and viable guidelines and protocols, including the identification, assessment, treatment and aftercare planning so that there is an overall healing of the child’s body and spirit.
