Sree: The 5 Star theatre
in Chennai
A Five Star theatre. What else could one
describe the new baby, Sree of the Sathyam Complex of theatres in Chennai.
Floorings made with high quality black galaxy granite, aesthetically designed and fully
air-conditioned lobbies, spacious toilets (including separate urinals for children), life
size mirrors with Jaguar tap fittings at the wash and even a hand drier there!
Belonging to the Balaji group of companies, the new theatre could well boast of high-class
acoustics and aesthetic designing. Though it can seat only 420 viewers in theatrical
history, the small theatre has set for itself an exclusive place amongst the theatres of
the city.
Curious as it may seem, when most of the old theatres
are
giving way to multi-floored shopping complexes, here is one which adds another to its
number of theatres. Will it be rewarding, as the going is tough for the cine industry with
a host of satellite channels and cable TV systems? Said K.R. Subramaniam, Manager of
Satyam Complex of theatres: "It is true that in todays environment, there is
not much money in running theatres. But we aspire to earn a name rather than just money.
That is why we never hesitated to bring in the latest features from advanced countries,
though it cost us a fortune. Moreover, our Director, Sri Kiran Reddy, is always for
improving and in innovating further the structure of our theatres. He ensures our
participation in the annual Hong Kong cinema theatres exhibition, not for
enjoying a holiday but to bring home the latest improvements there. Even today, he is
there looking for newer attractions." Subramaniam is also set to join his Director
soon, so that both can experience the specialities there and implement them here at a
later date.
The new theatre is unique in many ways. Cup holders for
every seat so that one can enjoy his drink while watching the movie, upwardly projected
aisle lights in rows for easy viewing, imported fluid neon lamps for the steps, specially
acquired upholstries for side walls and even innovative exit boards. Besides,
the theatre can play both - Dolby Digital and DTS systems and to support them is equipped
with imported JBL speakers and QSE amplifiers, the best equipment for theatre
applications.
"The star attraction for the theatre is the small balcony
which can accommodate just 30 persons. Entrance would be restricted to only
couples, and instead of the regular chairs we have provided two-seater sofas," said
Subramaniam. Suitably christened as the rendezvous, the balcony materially
tries to inculcate a sense of togetherness indeed! It has a separate lobby (fully
air-conditioned) with an aesthetically designed roof and a kiosk selling snacks, cool
drinks, etc. The lobby is furnished with several single-seater sofas and bar-chairs, so
that the viewers can comfortably sit and discuss matters during the interval. For
those who come in larger groups, arrangements are made to serve them with snacks and cool
drinks, on order basis, even when the show is on.
But are the Chennaiites so cultured to nurture and
preserve the rare ambience of the theatre? What are the plans to retain the same?
Subramaniam acknowledges the difficult job on hand. "It will be a tough job
maintaining the theatre and to achieve that we have employed more hands accordingly. There
is a real challenge waiting for us. To avoid those with little (or no) civic sense, we
intend to price the entry on a higher side, but everything depends on the permission we
finally get. But, irrespective of the difficulties involved in, we are determined in
giving the Chennaiites an international experience, right in the heart of Chennai."
Sree would be soon thrown open to the general public and in a rare explicit coincidence of
the promoters intent, the first movie to be screened here would be Hum saath
saath hain (we are together). Yes, the promoters are with the public in
promoting leisure and pleasure!
