Mani Ratnam fails

It's sad but true. 'Yuva' as well as its Tamil version 'Ayitha Ezhuthu' hasn't got the public response that one had expected for ace director Mani Ratnam's film. The Hindi version has had a lukewarm response, the Tamil one hasn't exactly set the box office on fire, and the dubbed Telugu version too hasn't fared well in Andhra Pradesh. The director has set a high standard for himself, and seems his fans would like nothing less than that!

Chaya in item numbers

One thought Chaya Singh would be welcomed by all after her spirited performance in 'Thiruda Thirudi'. But that does not seem to be the case. 'Kavithai', her recent release, had newcomers in its cast and technical list, and was a total disaster at the box office. And then came her item number in Vikram-starrer 'Arul'. Nothing to rave about in that either. But now one hears that the actress is besieged with offers to do similar item numbers! Meanwhile, Chaya has dubbed for Sadha for her first Kannada film 'Monalisa'. All in gratitude to director Indrajit who had given Chaya her first break in films.

With Ramya playing the second lead, the film also has Devayani and Prakashraj in the cast. And the film is directed by her hubby Sunder C. The actress, with her 'evergreen' image, has made a success of whatever she has ventured into. 'Giri', her first production, should also follow her success graph!

In search of a father

After director Bharatiraja played the baddie in 'Ayitha Ezhuthu', there was an effort to persuade director K Balachander to don the grease paint as Kamal Hassan's father in 'Vasoolraja MBBS'. The effort does not seem to have succeeded. Because now one learns that it is Girish Karnad who's playing the role of the hero's idealistic father in the film. Incidentally, KB is not only Kamal's mentor but also that of the the film's director, Saran. For, Saran had his apprenticeship under KB.
