The different days of pongal
Bhogi
The first day is celebrated as the
BHOGI PONGAL and is usually meant for domestic activities and of
being together with the family members
Pongal
The word "Pongal" refers
to the dish of sweet rice prepared on this occasion. The
festival is celebrated widely in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and
Karnataka.
Maatu
pongal
To the village people cow,
the giver of milk and the bull which draws the plough in the fields
are very valuable and therefore the farmers honour their dumb
friends by celebrating it as a day of thanks-giving to them
Kaanum
pongal
Kanu Pongal is celebrated by
sisters for the welfare of their brothers. This festival is
reminiscent of Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj of North India.
Sankranthi
According to the lunar calendar,
the sun moves from the Tropic of Cancer into the Tropic of Capricorn
today, thus beginning to face the northern hemisphere again and
signaling bright days. It is the harbinger of more light and
sunshine in life and lessening of its darker aspects.
Makara Jyothi
at Sabarimala
The miracle of the manifestation of
a 'Jyothi' on the Makara Sankranthi Day every year from the Kantha
Malai peaks at Sabari Malai is attributed the appearance of Swami
Ayyappan to bless HIS devotees.
Pollution in the air - Smokeless Bhogi
The smoke that comes from burning waste
mixes with the mist and causes thick smog, which results in
many an accident.
Thanksgiving

On this day, the people pay obeisance to the
Sun god, for having blessed them with bountiful rain and a good
harvest.
