1.What are the rules regarding the opening and closing hours of shops?

The opening and closing hours for shops in Tamil Nadu are tabulated below:-

S.No. Nature of Shop Opening hours Closing hours
1. All shops Not earlier than 6 a.m. Not later than 10 p.m.

Note:

a. Exception is given in the case of a person who is already being served or waiting to be served. In such cases, the premises can be kept open for a further quarter of an hour to help finish the job at hand.
b. No person shall carry on, in or adjacent to a street or public place, the sale of any goods after the hour fixed for closure of the establishment dealing in the same class of goods in the locality in which such street or public place is situated. This provision does not apply to newspapers.
c. All shops are exempted from the above rules during festival times. For details please refer Proc. No. 5.

2.Which organisations are exempt from the rules for opening and closing hours?

The following organisations/establishments are exempt from the rules regarding the opening and closing hours:

1. Hospitals and other institutions for the treatment or care of the sick, the infirm, the destitute or the mentally sick;
2. Chemists or druggists shops as specified, by general or special order, by the state government;
3. Clubs and residential hotels, hostels attached to schools or colleges, and establishments maintained in boarding schools;
4. Stalls and refreshments rooms at railway stations, docks, wharves or ports.
5. Software industries.
6. Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units.
