Vijay Siva’s chaste concert

Vijay Siva’s concert at the 32 ft Anjanaeyar temple in Nanganallur for the music series was pure and chaste. Instead of a Varnam, he began the concert with a composition of Muthuswamy Dikshitar ‘Vathapi’, which was delightful.

A short alapana in Panthuvarali was followed by ‘Ninnera Namithi’. His stirring neraval and swara interlude captured his musical erudition.

The less heard Evarikkai in Gowri Manohari, a kriti of Tyagaraja, was rendered with finesse. We had a sense of déjà vu on hearing the alapana of raga Ahiri. The kriti was undoubtedly ‘Mayamma’.

Vijay’s piece de resistance was Kamboji. Gifted with a melodious voice, he can easily traverse the three octaves with felicity. The Kamboji alapana and the kriti Raghu Vara showed that asura sadhakam can do wonders. This tough musical workout has alternate lines of swara and sahitya and his prayogam and sancharas were haunting. His rendition of this song in two speeds was received with great enthusiasm.

Even Seetha Kalyanam left an indelible imprint for its classicism.

Mullaivasal Chandramouli on the violin played exceptionally well. Manoj Siva, Vijay’s brother, gave the much-needed support. Purushottam on kanjira was fearlessly innovative.
