Chennai,
Dec 13: The title of Sangeetha Kala Nipuna was conferred on Carnatic vocalist
Madurai T N Seshagopalan by the Mylapore Fine Arts Club in Chennai today.
Justice R Jayasimha Babu, judge
of the Madras High Court, conferred the title on the Carnatic vidwan and also
inaugurated the 52nd Art Festival of the Mylapore Fine Arts Club.
He said Chennai was rightfully
considered the Mecca of music. No other city in the country could match the
music and dance festival of Chennai held every year in December.
However, he felt that similar
festivals could be held in some other month of the year also and not just during
December. He also wondered why the festival should be held indoors for a small
audience when the weather was pleasant. Performances could be held in open
grounds, catering to wider audiences. Places like the beach may also provide
better ambience for a cultural festival, he felt.
Eminent Carnatic musicians, N
Ramani and Kunnakudi R Vaidyanathan were among those who felicitated
Seshagopalan for being an outstanding musician, composer and also for being a
master of several instruments including the harmonium, veena and the keyboard.
Club vice-president V
Ramachandran, welcoming the gathering, said the judge was also a great lover of
Carnatic music. Seshagopalan replied suitably to the felicitation.
Honorary secretary K S
Venkataraman said the club had 750 members. The festival will be on till January
15, 2004, he added.
