The Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal, has assured assistance to the project of the Rasika Ranjani Sabha in Mylapore, Chennai, for renovation of the building.
The announcement was made in the presence of the Sankaracharya by the R R Sabha president A R Santhanakrishnan at the Sabha when the pontiff conferred the title of Kala Rathna on Carnatic vocalist Thanjavur V Sankara Iyer on December 22.
Santhanakrishnan said the renovation work would be taken up shortly. The sabha would soon have a main hall and a mini hall, he added.
The Sankaracharya said he was glad to note that the sabha had honoured an eminent musician like Thanjavur Sankara Iyer who had made immense contribution to the cause of Tamil music. He had also composed several songs, he pointed out.
He urged the R R Sabha to take up training of the youth in classical music as was done several decades ago through its school. He also stressed the need for learning music in the traditional, orthodox manner. It was only in Carnatic music and Vedic training that the guru-sishya parampara was well maintained and this should be continued without fail, he said.
The Sankaracharya stressed upon the lyrical value of Carnatic music. The songs helped reach God, he said adding that a proper and soulful rendering of the song 'Mokshamu galadha' could help the singer attain salvation.
Thanjavur Sankara Iyer, who replied suitably to the felicitation, thanked the Sabha for its gesture and to the Sankaracharya for conferring on him the title of Kala
Rathna.
The Sabha inaugurated its Annnual Festival of Dance and Music on 20th December, 2003. V Shankar, the President of Shanmukananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha, Mumbai, as well as Chairman of South India Educational Society, inaugurated the 15-day event by lighting the lamp.
A R Santhanakrishnan, sabha president, honoured V Shankar with a memento. V Shankar in his address, said "Music is the language of divinity which eliminates all discriminations and steps should be taken to protect and foster it". "Our country is known for temple arts but in this modern era most of the artistes like to perform only on stages and not in temples", he pointed out. Commending the efforts of the sabha in promoting the fine arts, particularly Carnatic music, he urged the sabha to motivate the young to develop fine arts.
R Nagarajan, Treasurer of the sabha, thanked the sabha members, organisers, sponsors and the participants for their support to the festival.
