Music review of 'Virumbikiren'

Director: Susi Ganesh
Music: Deva
Lyrics: Vairamuthu, Deva

This is a surefire winner for Deva. He is in his elements in this album and does what he knows best - composing down to earth 'gaana' songs and easy hummable tunes. If this is anything to go by, he has a very successful year ahead.

The opening lines of `Thoduk, thoduk' remind you of an earlier song of Deva from the movie 'Ninaivirukkum Varai'. But Unni Menon renders the song in such a way that makes it worth listening to. It is a sort of theme song too, as the title of the movie is used in the refrain.

Sadhana Sargam continues her winning streak in Tamil songs with 'Nijama, nijama'. Tippu accompanies her in this classical-based song.

Heartfelt vanakkam and a big welcome to Ceylon Manohar and hoping that he endows Tamil film songs with the much-missed pep and spice. Subha provides him able support in 'Pathale, pathale'. The song takes the listener through a journey of various moods and emotions starting off as a 'gaana' song, then switching into a softer mode (sung by Unnikrishnan and Saisan) and even encompassing elements of qawwali.

Then comes the best part of the album - a couple of bit songs, which are among the best Deva songs to be heard in a long, long time. The songs reinforce once again that Deva is the king of `gaana' songs.

'Enga ooru santhayile' and 'Kat kat kattai' have been sung by Krishnaraj, while 'Otharuva pottukkule' (lyrics for all three by Deva) and `Enna Achidi' have been sung by the King himself.

'Maman ponnu patha' is another bit song by Krishnaraj. The song is actually more an extension of the 'Thoduk thoduk' number. Hariharan and Sophy Satish sing the naughty number 'Kombu mulaitha mayile'.

After listening to Deva's songs, I can only say, "Intha cassettei naan virumbikiren."'
