Album review: Divine Unison

'Divine Unison' is a top selling release of The Gramophone Company of India. What else can one expect if it is a compilation of Carnatic renditions sung together by the doyen Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and Bharat Ratna M.S.Subbulakshmi. It is said that these were recorded at a private gathering here in Chennai. The CD/album has as many as thirteen songs. All the songs have a common aspect in the fact that they are very popular kritis. The album includes many composers too - the trinity, Thyagarajar, Shyama Sastri, Muthuswami Dikshitar, apart from Dharmapuri Subbarayar, Appaya Dikshitar, Mysore Maharaja Jayachamraja and Veena Seshanna.

M.S has supported Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer vocally, as in the Guru-Sishya Sampradaya. 'Sri Lakshmi Varaham' in Abhogi is the first rendition. ' Rave Himagiri' is a beautiful Swarajati in Todi and as been as beautifully rendered. Also included are 'Entarani' in Harikambhoji, Srinivasa Iyer's famous 'Sri Kanthimatim' in Hemavati, 'Evari Mata' in Kambhoji , 'E nati nomu' in Bhairavi, 'Maye Tvam' in Tarangini and yet another enjoyable 'Teliyaleru rama' in Dhenuka. An elaborate piece is Kharaharapriya 'Rama Nee Samanamevaru' in which Srinivasa Iyer has excelled in neraval and swaram (one can hear M.S's appreciation in the background). Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer has sung swaram in almost all the kritis, adhering to the tradition that is not too frequently upheld these days.

His swaram and alapana are so typical of his style of singing, in fact there are many upcoming musicians who follow him in this respect. He is the revered Guru to many. So is M.S - her perfect kriti renditions are almost always followed by many fans. Also in the album are a Javali in Chenchuruti and a Tillana in Jenjhooti. The album is priced at 150/- and CD at 650/-
