Music review of 'Little John'

Director: Singeetham Srinivasa Rao
Music: Pravin Mani
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

After assisting A.R. Rahman for long with rhythm programming and the like, Pravin Mani finally emerges out of the genius' shadow. Incidentally another composer recently emerged from the same stable - Rahman's keyboardist, Harris Jeyaraj - whose `Minnale' is on the top of the charts now, even though the songs strongly remind you of Rahman's compositions.

Pravin Mani has also scored the music for Vasundhara Das' debut Hindi pop album 'Meri Jaan', which has also
hit the stands.

'Paadava' begins with a simple and endearing acoustic guitar score and moves on to Sujatha's melodious voice, allowing it to dominate.

'Baila re', by Clinton and Chitra, begins like a jazz number but subsequently takes on folksy beats. The song is repeated on the flip side too.

'Lady' is a nice and lively reggae number by Srinivas and Sujatha, but I just wonder if the lyricist couldn't have fitted in some better and sensible English lyrics in the beginning of the song.

Vasundhara Das is in a slightly mellow mood in 'Leila' when compared to her earlier hot numbers for Rahman and Deva.

'Jagam Engume' (lyrics by Kavivarman) is a chanting of shlokas by Srinivas, who incidentally shares the credit with Pravin Mani for composing all the songs, except `Baila re' which has additional composing by Manikka Vinayakam.

'Gone case', by Pravin and Srinivas, is a strange mix of the trance and hip hop genres.

The movie is being produced by Media Dreams, which is promoting good movies. Their earlier production `Bharati' had good music and was appreciated for it. Hope the tradition will continue with their other offerings too.
