Music review of `Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi'

Director: Rahul Rawail
Music: Anu Malik
Lyrics: Sameer

Hema Malini played the roles of twins in `Seeta aur Geeta', Sridevi followed with `Chaalbaaz' and now it is Kajol's turn to play the role of twins with totally different personalities and attitudes. From what the promos show, the roles played by Kajol are similar to the ones played by Hemamalini and Sridevi: while one sister is very meek and mild-mannered, the other is brash and streetsmart. And the natural actress that she is, Kajol is sure to carry off the roles with aplomb.

This is the latest remake of the Hollywood movie `The Parent Trap'. Neetu Singh had a similar role in `Do Kaliyan', in which she played the twins separated after the parent's divorce.

Anu Malik had been quite busy the whole of last year, though he had a few hits. And like his earlier ones, the present effort too is mediocre.

`Tumko sirf tumko', by Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu, is worth listening to only for the violin score as it is handicapped by a very ordinary tune. The song is repeated on the flip side too with just Kumar Sanu's voice.

`Neend udh rahi hai', by Alka and Kumar Sanu, is another run-of-the-mill song. Anu starts off with a bagpipe score in `Saamne baith kar', then loses direction and adds some disco beats, only to end with a hotch-potch effort.

Sunidhi Chauhan does a good job on the reggae-style `Ab nahi to kab' with her throaty voice. Anu Malik also sings a few lines, though it would have been better if he had left himself out.

`Bandh kamre mein', by Anuradha Sriram, reminds you of the Amitabh song `Mere angane mein' from `Laawaris' and copies a lot of African rhythms and beats.

Alka sings `Khud bhi nachungi' to the accompaniment of heavy disco beats mixed with a tabla. As the title proclaims, it is a dance number but the net result is quite debatable.

The title track has been sung by Alka again. More mediocre stuff. Lyricist Sameer also seems to be caught in the same rut, and as a result there is nothing `meethi' in the album, only `khatti'.
