- `Kannan Varuvan' |
Director: Sundar C
Music Composer: Sirpi
I picked up the album with a lot of hope after seeing the names of singers like Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, S.P. Balasubramanian, Sujatha and S. Janaki on the flap. Only after I listened to it did I remember the adage: Never judge a book (or a cassette) by its cover. Despite the bunch of talented singers, music director Sirpi lets us down with a very mediocre score. The last movie in which he did a good job (never mind that the sounds and beats were lifted from songs of 'Shaggy') was `Ullathai Allitha' and that was a huge hit. Sirpi is yet to rise to the same level.
The first song `Kaathukku Pookal Sondam', by Hariharan and Sujatha, starts off nicely though Hariharan's humming reminds you of `Keechu Kiliye' from `Mugavari', which had music by Deva. `Kadalakattu Kuyile', by Shankar Mahadevan and Sujatha, has been shamelessly copied from `Uppu Karuvadu' from `Mudhalvan', which had music by A.R. Rahman. At least the beats could have been re-worked to give them a new feel, but it turns out just a loud number.
`Kattarutha Thendrale' has been sung by Shankar and Sundar. If Sundar is as talented a music composer as a singer, it is better he take up the baton too for his
movies. Sirpi's creative juices seem to have stopped flowing. `Seeraga Samba', by S.P. Balasubramanian and S.Janaki, copies sounds from `Kuluvaliley' composed by Rahman for `Muthu'. It is a naughty, but cute song and might have made the grade with some imaginative arrangements by the composer.
`Kudaimele Kudaivachu', by SPB, Charan, Yugendran and Chitra, has used sounds from Rahman's score for `Indian', but is still unimpressive. `Vennilave', by Hariharan, is a soft, romantic number and is by far the best in the album. One wonders why the composer did not score the rest of the songs like this one?
