Review of 'Ghaath'

Director: Akashdeep
Music composer: Anu Malik
Lyrics: Sameer

This is the second venture by Akashdeep and Anu Malik, the first being the Baba Sehgal-Sheeba starrer `Miss 420'. That movie was started when Baba Sehgal was a rage after his debut album `Thanda Thanda Paani', but its release was delayed till Baba Sehgal's novelty had worn off and it came a cropper at the box-office. The songs too were nothing much.

Akashdeep, undaunted, declared that his next movie `Ghaath' would become a big hit. Anu Malik tries to lend him a helping hand by composing reasonably good tunes, though they don't measure up to his work in the recent `Refugee' and `Josh'.

`Hum bhi samajh rahen hain' is a slow song by Hariharan and Alka Yagnik, which begins with a flute track that reminds you of `Mere naina saawan bhado', which was composed by R.D. Burman.

In `Teri yeh jawani', the composer experiments, making Udit Narayan, who is known for his romantic numbers, sing a naughty number along with Sapna Awasthi. There is another version on the flip side by `dandiya' queen, Falguni Pathak, which is better. This dance song is in the league of the composer's `Aaila re' from `Jung'.

Pankaj Udhas is in his usual form in the ghazal-like `Teri ashiqui meri zindagi', which he sings with Alka Yagnik. `Jo dar gaya woh mar gaya' is a tapori song in the `Mumbaiya' lingo by KK, Shaan, Rahul and Anu Malik himself and is bound to be very popular. This genre was pioneered by `Kya bolti tu' in `Ghulam', followed by `Apun bola' in `Josh'.

`Kisi ne sach hi kaha hai' has been rendered by Shabbir Kumar, who is singing after quite some time. The lead players Manoj Bajpai, who plays an honest police officer, Om Puri and Tabu also speak some dialogues in the song. `Jhumka chandi da' is just another loud song by Jaspinder Narula, Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam and Udit Narayan and has nothing much going for it.

Salim-Sulaiman compose the score for `The colour of Ghaath', the theme music for the film, which starts with Om Puri's baritone. Karsan Sagaria and Sulaiman join in. An okay attempt by Anu Malik.
