Music review of 'Friends'

Director: Siddique
Music: Illayaraja
Lyrics: Pazhani Bharati

Make no mistake. Illayaraja is lying low but that does not mean he can be ignored. He had a couple of good movies such as 'Sethu', 'Kannukkul Nilavu' and 'Hey Ram' in the past year. Okay, they were not big musical hits but they showcased his genius.

'Friends' is his first offering in the New Year. Though the album is not very brilliant, it is full of melody and has a couple of pleasant numbers. Let us hope that he is able to again occupy the centre stage in Kollywood and give us some tunes to escape the mediocrity of the existing composers.

The album opens with actor Vijay giving an introduction to the movie; he does the same for all the songs too. His fans are going to be a happy lot. The first song 'Thendral varum' has been sung well by Hariharan and Bhavatharini. The song has shades of Carnatic music and makes for good hearing.

The foot-tapping 'Rukku, rukku' starts off with some enticing drumbeats. The dance song has been sung by Vijay Yesudoss, Yuvanshankar, Drums Murugan and Sowmiya. Yuvanshankar sounds like what Illayaraja did in his early years. Looks like he is taking over his father's legacy, for Karthikraja has not been doing much for a long, long time.

'Kuyillukku' is another nice song by SPB, Hariharan and Shankar Mahadevan and is repeated on the flip side too. 'Manjal Poosum' is a nice duet by Sujatha and Devan. In 'Penkaloda', which is dominated by Bhangra beats, Sujatha and Hariharan argue over who is better - men or women.

'Poongatrae' is the best song of the album. A sad song by Hariharan, it is sung to the accompaniment of only the 'dafli'. The sarangi score in the background adds to the poignancy of the song. 'Vaanum Perisuthan', which begins in the Carnatic style, is an ode to friendship a la 'Mustafa, mustafa' in 'Kaadal Desam'. It has been sung by SPB, Vijay Yesudoss and Arunmozhi.
