Dum Dum Dum

Director: Azhagar Perumal
Music: Kartik Raja
Lyrics: N. Muthukumar, P. Vijay, Vaali

There was much controversy some time ago over who would score the music for this movie, produced by Mani Ratnam and directed by his erstwhile assistant, Azhagar Perumal. Dheena, who shot into fame with the brilliant title score for the TV serial `Chitti' and several others, was originally supposed to score the music. But after some misunderstanding, it was announced that Karthik Raja would take over. Karthik Raja has always been influenced by hip-hop and reggae, but in this album he very consciously keeps away from these influences and allows folk beats to take prominence.

'Harini sings the classical-based folk number `Sutrum bhoomi', which has heavy jazz influences. Neil on the acoustic guitar and Keith Peters on the bass guitar deserve special mention.

'Desingu raja', by Sujatha and Harish Ragavendar, is a nice track with some good percussion work thanks to Suresh Peters, who goes back to his first love, drums.

'Unperai sonnale', a soft romantic number by Unnikrishnan and Sadhana Sargam, reminds you of Karthik Raja's score for 'Ullam Kollai Poguthey'.

'Atthan varuvaha' (lyrics: P. Vijay), is a cute song by Malgudi Shubha, Chitra Sivaraman, Harini, Tippu and T.K. Karthik.

'Ragasiyamai', by Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam and Ramanathan, has a nice violin solo by Kannan. It needs to be mentioned that Sadhana Sargam has improved her Tamil pronunciation by leaps and bounds, though there is still some scope for improvement.

'Krishna...krishna' (lyrics: Vaali) is a dance song by Harish, Karthik and Febi.

This is the first Mani Rathnam film in which Karthik Raja has worked. Here is to wishing that the relationship grows and results in some good music like the ones Illayaraja composed for `Nayakan', `Anjali', `Mouna Ragam' and `Agni Natchathiram'..
