Music review of 'Dheena'

Director: A.R. Muragadass
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Lyrics: Vaali

'It is family time' may well be the theme song at the maestro Illayaraja's house this Pongal. All the three major releases in this festival season have music by members of the family - Illayaraja has scored the music for the Vijay-Soorya-Devayani starrer 'Friends', Karthik Raja has scored the music for the Vijaykanth-starrer 'Vanchinathan' and his sibling, Yuvan Shankar Raja, has scored the music for the Ajit-Laila starrer 'Dheena'. Wow, what a way to begin the New Year!

This is the first time Yuvan Shankar Raja is scoring the music for an Ajit movie, though his elder brother had scored the music for 'Ullasam', which was quite popular. The music for this movie is also very fresh and youthful and encompasses the latest trends in sound and music. In fact, A.R. Rahman was originally supposed to score the music, but it was later given to Yuvan Shankar.

The techno-trance 'Kathal website', by Shankar Mahadevan and Harini, opens the album. The song is repeated on side B also. Vaali shows he is still young at heart; the song is testimony to this.

'Nee illai enral' has been sung by Murugan, M. Iyar and Bhavatharani. The song has a qawwali feel and has been sung well.

Hariharan is able to convey the pain of a lover in 'Sollamal thottu'. So good is his rendition. The subdued piano score in the background adds to the soulful mood of the song.

Harish Raghavendra does a good job on 'Ennenjil', which is dominated by trumpets and Samba drums. Harish is on song with his superb work in 'Bharati', which had music by Illayaraja, and the yet-to-be-released 'Minnale', which has music by Harris Jeyaraj.

Nagma surfaces after a long time with a figure to kill for in the song 'Vathikuchi', which has been sung superbly by S.P. Balasubramaniam and has a nice guitar track. The anger in the song reminds one of SPB's earlier song 'Kaetten' for Ajit in 'Amarkkalam', which had music by Bharadwaj.
