Articles on Music Reviews

From April 2000 to May 2000

Music review of 'Jungle' (May 27th 2000)
Perhaps Sandeep Chowta should stick to background scoring. His handling of instruments, especially the drums, is very impressive. But in most of the songs, the magic is missing.

Vonda Shepherd Songs from Ally McBeal' (May 26th 2000)
The themes are very Ally: lost love, first loves, loneliness, the eternal search for happiness and celebrations of friendship.

Review of `Kushi' (May 25th 2000)
There are a couple of super numbers, including one that will surely be regarded as among the best of both Deva and Unnikrishnan. But why do composers repeat their own old tunes and copy from others? This factor makes this album no cause for 'Kushi' (happiness).

Blessid Union of Souls (May 24th 2000)
The lyrics too are worth a mention: they come from the soul and are poems on love and life in modern times. A mix of rock and soul, BUOS makes music for the heart and from the heart.

Everything But The Girl (May 23rd 2000)
'Temperamental' is a 10-track dance album that intertwines warm house rhythms ('Lullaby of Clubland' and the title track) and drum 'n' bass ('Blame' and 'Compression').

Review of 'Raja ko rani se pyar ho gaya' (May 19th 2000)
The first song of the album `Dil chura ke chal di', by Udit Narayan, is captivating and is eminently hummable. The chorus by children and the lyrics by Javed Akhtar add to its charm.

'Tarkieb': 'Greats' Make Comeback (May 17th 2000)
The Sabri brothers are back and take off from where they left in 'Nahi hona tha' in 'Pardes'. This is a 'must listen' for all fans of qawwalis.

Music Review of 'Chal mere bhai' (May 11th 2000)
The theme music seems inspired from a lot of sources, including A.R. Rahman's theme for `Rangeela'.

Review of 'Josh' (May 3rd 2000)
`Apun bola' is on the lines of Aamir Khan's `Kya bolti tu' from `Ghulam' and is written by Nitin Raikwar, the baadshah of `tapori' songs. Shah Rukh is accompanied by Hema Sardesai in this song.

Music review of Refugee  (Apr 26th 2000)
The first song of the album, 'Panchi nadiyan' by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik, is the most memorable. The song begins with the recitation of some lovely lines by Abhishek and Kareena.

'Butterfly', from Veena to pop music  (Apr 21st 2000)
This album marks the pop debut of well known Veena player E Gaayathri. Music for the album has been composed by Mahesh, who shot into fame with his movie `Nammavar'.

Audio Review 'Playing my game'  (Apr 19th 2000)
Let not the fact that she is merely a teenager bias you. Or lead you to slot Lene Marlin with the likes of Christina Aguilera or Brittany Spears.

Audio Review 'Affirmation'  (Apr 18th 2000)
Savage Garden's much awaited second album has finally hit the record stores and the music is - unmistakably - 'Savage Garden'!

Songs from the Last Century  (Apr 17th 2000)
George Michael's first record in the new century is appropriately named 'Songs from the Last Century'.

Review of 'Jung'  (Apr 11th 2000)
The theme song of this movie begins with chanting of verses from the `Bhagvad Gita'. The song has been sung well by Hariharan and Mahalaxmi

Music Album: Donde Estan Los Ladrones?  (Apr 06th 2000)
By the age of 8, she was writing her own songs. By the time she reached her adolescent years, she had bagged a recording contract with Sony Music.

Music Review of Kandukondain Kandukondain  (Apr 04th 2000)
Let us face it. `Kandukondain Kandukondain' is not in the class of `Minsara Kanavu', the first film by director Rajiv Menon, music for which was composed by A.R. Rahman.
