Music review of 'One 2 ka 4'

Director: Shashilal Nair
Music: A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

The music for this movie is very different from Rahman's recent scores for the Hindi movies 'Pukar' and 'Zubeida'. It doesn't showcase much of Rahman's ability in rhythm or his versatile genius. This is more of a straight and conventional Bollywood score.

'Khamoshiyan gungunane lagi', by Lata Mangeshkar and Sonu Nigam, is the best song of the album even though it reminds you of 'Jiya jale, jiya jale' from the movie 'Dil Se', which also had music by Rahman. Incidentally, this is Lata's first duet with Sonu, one of the best talents in the industry now. Mehboob is at his best and his lyrics are sheer poetry: 'Khamoshiyan gungunane lagi, Tanhaiyaan muskurane lagi.' There is another version of the song on the flip side.

'Sone nahin na sahi', by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan, has the feel of a marriage song because of the shehnai and the tabla-dholak score.

'I am sorry', by Udit Narayan, Srinivas and Poonam Bhatia, is the most Rahman-like score in the album. Udit's singing reminds you of the song 'Karte ho tang mujhe saanjh savere' from 'Milan'. Various sounds from Latino guitars to their electric counterparts are used in the song.

The theme 'One 2 ka 4', sung by Clinton, is terrific. A fast-paced number, it starts off with tabla and dholak beats and slowly moves on to synthesized sounds and electronic beats. This is Rahman's home turf and he gives a good display of his talents and ability.

Rageshwari makes her debut in a Rahman song in the duet with Sonu Nigam 'Osaka Muraiya', which has some disco beats made famous by Mithun Chakraborty's dancing and Bappi Lahiri's music.

'Allay, allay' is a fun song by Sukhwindra Singh and Shaan. It has a nice flute track by Naveen.

'Haye dil ki baazi laga', by Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam, has a Seventies feel to it and has excellent sarangi work by Ustad Sultan Khan.

Nothing special when it comes to a Rahman score but leagues ahead of the ordinary Bollywood scores.
