Global Carnatic Music Association launched Events

Several leading Carnatic musicians have got together to form the Global Carnatic Music Association (GCMA), with headquarters in Chennai, to promote and celebrate Indian music and culture worldwide.

This will be a professionally-run organisation to provide a forum for advocacy of Carnatic music, said its founder and chairperson Sudha Ragunathan in Chennai on November 27, 2007.

It will also provide a common platform for musicians and artistes to share their experiences, discuss common issues and sharpen their skills, she added.

The trustee of GCMA, K N Sashikiran, said membership will be open to all artistes in the field of Carnatic music. Age would be no bar.

Sashikiran said it had already received good response from over 100 artistes in the southern states, and also from musicians abroad.

Veteran violinist T N Krishnan stressed the importance of having such a forum.

Leading vocalist Aruna Sairam said the organisation would conduct a free health check-up campaign at Hotel Residency Towers on November 29 and 30, 2007, exclusively for musicians.

Vocalist P Unnikrishnan stressed the need for globalisation of Carnatic music.
