BMK, Chaurasia, Subbu Arumugam felicitated

Three stalwarts of music - eminent flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Carnatic vidwan M Balamuralikrishna and noted Villupaaattu exponent, Subbu Arumugam - were felicitated at a function in Chennai recently.

Subbu Arumugam

This was organised by Sri Krishna Sweets as part of the Chennai 365 series of programmes.

Sri Jaya Ganesh Tala Vidyalaya was also associated with the programme. Recitation of slokas and from the Vedas was provided by one group of scholars while another set of musicians sang some Tamil verses from Thevaram and Thiruvasagam.

The three musicians said they had attended many felicitation programmes for them but this one was unique and presented in the traditional manner.

Maestro Ilayaraja

Film music director Maestro Ilayaraja said to have Chaurasia play for a film song, though he had taken a policy decision not to perform for films, was wonderful.

This happened in Mumbai when he was recording a song, and Chaurasia who came there to greet him asked him how he could do a recording without him.

Ilayaraja hoped that efforts would be made to bring out an album of special kirtanais prepared by Balamuralikrishna.

He said every effort should be made by music lovers to produce this album.

M Murali, managing director of Sri Krishna Sweets, and ghatam vidwan Vinayakaram presented mementoes to the artistes.

He said a musician from south India and another Hindustani musician would be honoured every month as part of the Chennai 365 programmes.

Balamuralikrishna said only Bala Krishna remained as part of his name as 'Murali' had been taken over by Hariprasad Chaurasia.
