Majnu

Director: Ravichandran
Cast: Prashant, Rinkie Khanna, Vivek, Raghuvaran, Sonu, Rati Agnihotri.

It is a love story with political manouevers and action weaved in. It would have turned into an engaging entertainer had the director not left so many loopholes in the script and narration, as he shuttles between depicting ‘love’ and ‘terrorism’. Like his heroine Heena (Rinkie) who gets caught in the crossfire. But Heena at least wins her ‘love’ in the end. Though it’s the much battered, clichéd scene of the lovers being chased by the villains, and making a last minute jump into the train.

The assassination attempt, on the hero’s father, a politician, by his rival fails. But Heena, the girl from Calcutta, on a trip to Chennai with her friends, is the chief suspect, thanks to some circumstantial evidence. The hero who had fallen for Heena after a few accidental encounters with her, believes in her innocence. He gives her refuge at his place, apprehends some of the culprits, but doesn’t try to clear her name. Instead he sneaks her out of the city. Why he does not clear her name is unexplained. The hero next follows her to Calcutta to express his love to her. She meanwhile realising that her brother was the kingpin of the gang (no explanation offered for his turning into a terrorist), and was plotting to kill the hero, feigns indifference to the latter, so that he would leave the place. Some straight talk would have helped here too, for the hero oblivious of the danger to his life, still mooning over her is a sitting duck for the villains. After many unconvincing scenes, the duo egged on by Heena’s mother (Rati) manage to catch the departing train. Poor Rati, she looks relieved, finally having got to do something, in an otherwise wasted role.

Prashant goes through the role with ease, having played similar ones earlier. Rinkie Khanna (daughter of Rajesh Khanna-Dimple) seems bogged down by the language problem in some scenes, but makes a valiant effort to fit in. Vivek’s comedy brings some relief.
