Director: K.Balachander
Cast: Madhavan, Simran, Sneha, Raghavendra Lawrence, Vaali, Vivek, Radhika
Choudhry.
The film centres round four characters. Madhava, a doctor by profession (also an overnight star, having acted in a single film, we're told). Chella, his nurse who carries a torch for him. Simi, the elders' choice as the suitable bride for Madhava. And Azhagu a popular dancer who is attracted to Simi. The marital boat is rocked when Simi learns of Madhava's brief fling during his college days and about his illegitimate son. A furious Simi walks out of the marriage. The duo make some half hearted attempts to get each other married to their respective admirers, and then go in for a reconciliation.
Madhavan goes overboard with his expressions, and has put in oodles of weight too. Simran, normally a controlled actress, seems to lose control in her emotional scenes here, twitching her lips so badly, that it looks like the character is going to have an epileptic fit any moment. There is not much of a role for Sneha, who has to just look pretty. Dance-choreographer Lawrence has worked hard on the movements for the dances he has been given, but has a long way to go where emoting is concerned. Vivek makes use of the few scenes he gets to provide some well needed relief. Here is one film where
one wishes he'd got more footage.
It's a thin knot stretched to what seems like an endless length. The characters are insipid, the narration lacklustre, the film - a monotonous journey for the audience. Coming from a director who is known for his strong storylines, interesting characters and a simple but effective narrative style, it's quite a disappointment.
