Shankar's Nayak compares well with its Tamil version, Mudalvan.

It's a topic relevant to the times. Of power hungry politicians, exploited public, and a single man who attempts to clear the cesspool. Shivaji Rao (Anil Kapoor), attached to a private T.V. Channel gets his first big break when he is asked to do a live talk show with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra State (Amrish Puri). Shivaji Rao corners the man with his aggressive questioning. The obviously disconcerted CM throws a challenge of his interviewer. ‘Take my seat for just one day and you will realise the problems I face.’ To the CM’s dismay Shivaji Rao accepts, the legalities are gone through and he is sworn in. So far so good! Then, the one-day the CM goes on a 'suspension-spree', removing anyone found corrupt or inefficient. A steno walking behind him with a typewriter, ready to type out orders provides some unintended humour. The new CM does find the time to flex his muscles at some rowdies, chasing them on streets and on the top of running buses. Anil Kapoor can do no less! The director's handling of these scenes is very juvenile, very simplistic.

The day of power is over and Shivaji Rao sees the repercussions of his actions rebounding on him. Persuaded to stand for elections, he wins and becomes the Chief Minister again. The audience, together with the public, waits eagerly to see what he would do now, but are in for a disappointment. The culprit is the director. Shankar, not too sure of what he should make his hero do - now that he is in the CM's chair - brings an assassin into the narration. The new CM sneaks into the village to meet his sweetheart and the whole place goes up in flames. Incidentally, one of the first acts of the CM was to send over a cell phone to his girl. He goes to spend some quite moments with his parents and a bomb destroys his whole house. Some work for the stunt-master here.

Though Shivaji Rao's antics seem unbelievable and unrealistic, the impact is both entertaining as well as effective. The drama rolls on with an overdose of blood-and-gore before it is brought to an end, when Shivaji Rao becomes a politician in the true sense of the word. The plot is unconventional, and the director has put in efforts to make it look believable.

Anil Kapoor is a delight to watch, and is most certainly the best choice for this role which requires a certain amount of dignity, truthfulness and integrity. Rani Mukherjee plays his ladylove in the film and, as expected, she has very little to do except being part of some well picturised songs. Once again, her voice is a major disadvantage. Amrish Puri is his usually villainous self. But it is Paresh Rawal who steals the show. As the CM's upright assistant, he adds tremendous flair to his character and to the film as a whole. Jonny Lever seems to appear for providing comic relief.

The action scenes are a treat, especially the fight in the slush. This scene was shot with the help of 36 cameras, which in itself is a feat.

A ‘must see’ for politicians (it's high time they did some soul-searching) and a ‘could see’ for those who are sick of watching flicks that offer only undiluted romance.
