Lagaan - not to be missed

Director: Astutosh Gowariker
Cast: Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, Paul Blackthorne

The game of cricket is a burning passion with most of the kids and is part of their childhood too, be it in the city or towns. This is what Lagaan, a three-hour-forty-minute film, revolves around and this maiden venture of Aamir Khan Productions has really paid off and is set to break many records.

The story is set in a small village in central India in the days of the Raj and the year is 1893. In a village called Champaner a Double Lagaan (Tax) is imposed on the villagers but the British Officer, Captain Andrew Russell, offers them a way out. If they defeat the British at their own game of cricket, the entire province need not pay tax for three years. But if they lose the match, they would have to pay three times the tax. This starts ‘the battle without bloodshed’. The rest of the story revolves around Bhuvan, a young farmer, who with the help of Russell’s sister Elizabeth, instills faith in his people and gets them to fight back.

The movie is a treat to watch and the match, at the end, has the viewers glued to their seats. Aamir Khan has come back with a bang and his performance is one of the best. Television star Gracy Singh has had a good debut. Paul Blackthorne and Rachel Shelley play their roles well. A.R. Rahman’s music is awesome and the director, Astutosh Gowariker, has given us one of the best films of the decade.
