Kill Bill Vol.1
Director:
Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Uma Thurman, Lucy Liu, David Carradine, Daryl Hannah, Vivica A. Fox, Michael
Madson.
'Revenge is a dish best served cold', begins Tarantino's fourth film, a fascinating saga of revenge. The Bride aka, the black thunder (Thurman) is brutally attacked on her wedding dress rehersal day by the deadly Viper assasination squad, led by her former lover, Bill.
Left for dead, she survives through sheer grit, comes out of coma after four years, vowing revenge. She draws up a death list of her tormentors. O-Ren Ishii aka Cottonmouth (Luci Liu); Elle Driver aka California Mountain Snake (Hannah); Vernita Green aka Copperhead (Fox) and Budd aka Sidewinner (Madsen). How the bride gets her revenge against seemingly invincible foes is what forms the rest of the story.
From the opening scenes to the end it's Tarantino's ode to the Kung-Fu genre of films. Awe-inspiring in its fight-choreography, it has a fascinating, unusual narrative style, brilliant in its composition of shots, the sound effects adding to the power-packed scenes.
As Tarantino narrates his story, he moves back and forth in time, using a lot of flashbacks. Animation to narrate the past of O-Ren Ishii works out well, the animation scenes at times more powerful than the live action ones!
The film, with its violence and gore and sprouting fountains of blood, is definitely not for the faint-hearted. But for action-lovers, Tarantino's intriguing saga of revenge is not to be missed. Watch out for Kill Bill Vol.2.
