'Dumm Dumm Dumm', the Madhavan - Jyotika starrer, produced by Maniratnam may have been director Azhagam Perumal’s first film to be released. But 'Udaya' was the first film that the
director had signed, that too more than a year ago. Starring Vijay and Simran, the shooting for the film had started too, but for some reason it came to a stop midway through. Now the film has been revived and shooting is on at a fast pace. V. Natarajan of Pyramid films is the producer of the movie.
The story centres round a couple that falls in love, part ways, and meets again after a long gap. A scene was shot in St.Thomas Mount, Chennai, and participating in it were Vijay and Simran. The duo plays Uday and Vasanthi respectively. They are college mates who go their ways due to circumstances. Uday later tries to gather details about Vasanthi, but is not successful. The duo accidentally meets and is very happy to see each other again. They reminisce
about the past, how they had fallen in love, etc. Uday tells Vasanthi how he had tried to find her and the threads of the past are picked up again.
A scene of a building on fire, and Vijay rescuing some children was also shot at a set erected in film city, Chennai. Uday, a lecturer in a college, is returning home on his scooter. He suddenly hears children screaming inside a building that is on fire and they are trapped inside it. A crowd had gathered outside, but no one had ventured to rescue the children. Uday rushes in, breaks down the door, and rescues the children. When he thinks that he has got them all out, he hears yet another scream from inside. Uday rushes again to rescue the last child trapped in the fire. Shooting the scene was cinematographer
Priyan.
The film has music by A.R.Rehman. Apart from Vijay and Simran, the cast includes Vivek, Nasser, Bala Singh, and Rajesh. Producer Natarajan also plays a cameo role in the film.
