Madurai getting facelift
T he renovation of the Thirukalyana Thousand Pillar Mandapam and Pudhu Mandapam in Sri Meenakshi Amman temple, which houses exquisite sculptures, is to be taken up at a cost of Rs 2.5
crore.
Tourism Development Board officials said the renovation of these mandapams, which are among the main attractions of the temple, are being undertaken as part of the Rs 30 crore programme to develop the temple city of Madurai as a tourist hub.
T he officials said the board, which met in Madurai recently, had also received the assurance from the city corporation that parks would be created, road development undertaken and stormwater drainage facility provided at a cost of Rs 22 crore.
The Kunnathur choultry is being converted into a shopping complex where the book and utensil shops housed in Pudhu Mandapam would be shifted.
The Electricity Board would give a facelift to the main streets of the city. Underground cables would be laid and transformers near the Tirumalai Naicker Mahal would be shifted.
