Roman holiday - 2

On the southern summit of the capital is the Temple of Jupiter which was the centre of Rome. Several important meetings, religious and political ceremonies, were held here. It was the seat of the municipal government and the present government meets in an ambience of Renaissance splendour. One can even see the podium.

Victor Emmanuel, another great landmark, is situated near the Colosseum. Construction of the monument began in 1885 and was inaugurated in 1911 in honour of Victor Emmanuel-II of Savoy the finest king of unified Italy. The flames of victory (virgin fire) are still burning there and two guards stand there erect, guarding the monument. It has a few steps at the entrance. It is built of Brescian marble and has withstood the fury of nature.

The Roman Forum is another important relic. It was the centre of political, commercial and judicial life in ancient Rome. As the Roman population boomed, the Forum became small and in 46 BC Julius Caesar came up with a new one. It is a sprawling, huge complex and the remnants of a bygone era are clearly visible. I stood there and pondered upon Julius Caesar, August and Trajan. We were all transported into the ancient Roman world. The relics of the basilicas and the churches show that the Romans were spiritual.

The Forum cannot be viewed after 6 p.m. because of poor light but dogs and cats find it suitable to stay there.

The Trajan markets were considered among the wonders of the classical world. Emperor Trajan and his architect Apollororus of Damascus built this huge market. They sold everything from silks to spices to fresh fish, fruits and flowers. Not able to withstand the onslaught of nature, it now stands as a mute testimony to a bygone era.

Another important landmark in Rome is Trevi fountain opposite the Pantheon. It is Rome’s largest and most famous fountain. A fairly recent addition, the central figures are Neptune flanked by two Tritons. The fountain is named after a young girl, Trevi. She is pointing to the spring from which the water flows. It is a major tourist attraction. An interesting belief is that if a person throws a coin into the waters, it is said they would visit Rome again. I threw the coin a couple of times. The answer is anybody’s guess.

Trevi has been the star of many films set in Rome. ‘Roman Holiday’ which catapulted Audrey Hepburn to fame, was shot in Rome. We could recollect Audrey throwing coins in the Trevi fountain!
