Winning recipe
Photos Page

It is passé to say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. With society changing drastically, men take part in cooking as much as women. The new mantra is of course linked to competitions: The way to winning a prize is through a new and mouth-watering dish!

And there are many avenues opening for the talented cook. One such event was held recently in Chennai where my friend Jyothi Ramanakumar walked away with the second prize from among 80 entrants!

Jyothi is a homemaker, busy mother with two children and also a Kuchipudi dancer. A native of Vijayawada she won the prize for a new recipe in the ‘Nestle Cook ‘n’ Serve Contest’ in Chennai August 15. The main condition of the contest, held at Nilgiris Super Market, Arcot Road, Chennai, was that ‘Nestle Milkmaid’ should be used in the preparation of any delicacy.

My friend, not stopping with dance, wanted to try her luck with cooking also. She has won innumerable prizes in dance competitions and is proficient in ‘pot painting’ and ‘glass painting’. A chemistry graduate, she is probably instinctively aware of the correct proportion of ingredients in making a dish!

Just look at the name of the cake, ‘Sliced Apple Ring’! Is that fancy or what? But that is not enough to fool judges like the inimitable, uncrowned queen of the cooking world, Mallika Badrinath, and Shymala. The recipe was genuinely unique and so qualified for the prize.

But Jyothi could not believe her ears when the prizes were announced, as this was her maiden entry in such a culinary contest. Winning a second prize from an assembly of four score people is not a joke and she was suitably rewarded for her effort.

Jyothi is large-hearted enough to share the prize-winning recipe with us:

Sliced Apple Ring
Ingredients

  • Butter - 200 gm

  • Caster sugar - 75 gm

  • Flour - 200 gm

  • Nestle Milkmaid - 200 ml

  • Ground cinnamon - 1 teaspoon

  • Cored, grated dessert apples - 2

  • Flake almonds - 25 gm

Preparation:
Step – 1: Lightly grease the ring mould
Step – 2: In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add the beaten Milkmaid.
Step - 3: Sieve the flour and then fold flour into the creamed mixture
Step - 4: Add the grated apples and mix to a soft, dropping consistency
Step - 5: Sprinkle the almonds around the base of the mould and spoon the cake mixture on the top
Step - 6: Bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees C for 30 minutes
Step - 7: Leave the cake to cool in the pan before burning out and transferring to a wire rack. Cool completely. Serve the apple rings after cutting into slices.

Congrats Jyothi!
Looking forward to more mouth-watering delicacies from you.
