Mahadeva Iyer remembered

The IFCA (Southern Region) and Sri Krishna Sweets, Chennai, organised the Chef Amuthupadai programme on September 20, 2006, as part of the scheme to serve meals once a month to underprivileged children. The
participating school was Prabhavati Devi Jayapraksh Seva Kendra in Nandivaram, Guduvancherry.

The IFCA, by consistently contributing towards the development of the culinary profession, has done several charity events. Once a month they visit an orphanage and serve a sumptuous meal.

This noble cause was conceptualised by M Murali, managing director, Sri Krishna Sweets, in association with chef P Soundararajan, general secretary, IFCA, and supported by chefs from hotels in Chennai.

Chennai 365 is an effort by Sri Krishna Sweets in association with social, sports and cultural bodies to do good to vibrant Chennai and to energise lives across a wide spectrum of society thereby building better individuals and a better community, woven together by the spirit of brotherhood. Chennai 365 is a part of corporate social responsibility with one good programme a day from January 1, 2006, till December 31, 2006, with the aim of doing at least one good deed everyday all through the year.

The meal that was served on September 20, 2006, was to mark the birth anniversary of the founder of Sri Krishna Sweets, N K Mahadeva Iyer. Born on September 20, 1923, he was a pioneer in manufacture of pure ghee sweets. He came to Coimbatore to work at a very tender age. From a modest start of delivering food packets to mill workers, he established a small catering house and eventually set up a sweet stall in the city to sell wheat halwa, milk halwa and the famous Mysurpa, making it soft and tasty.

He laid the foundation stone for Sri Krishna Sweets in 1948. He conceptualised the business model of making sweets in pure ghee in a centralised kitchen and distribute it through company-owned outlets. The popularity of the stores grew stronger day after day with more varieties and with 54 outlets to its credit.
