Pongal at Southern Aromas
The Residency Towers brings to
you authentic festive treats this Pongal. This holy day marks the commencement
of the Sun's northern course in the Heavens, known as the Uttarayana patha. This
turn in the Sun's course takes place when it enters the sign of Makara or
Capricorn.
Interestingly, this is the only
festival in the Hindu calendar that follows a solar calendar and is celebrated
on January 14 every year (all other Hindu festivals are computed using the lunar
calendar).
Sankranti is called Pongal in
Tamil Nadu and is celebrated with a popular dish with the same name. Kolams or
rangoli and prayers constitute the celebration of the festival. The farmers
worship their harvested crops and share it with friends and relatives. And in
true Residency tradition, this year too, it brings to you authentic tastes and
flavours of the Pongal festival.
On January 14, Southern Aromas,
the southern speciality restaurant at The Residency Towers, will bring to you
traditional Pongal lunch and treat guests to some exclusive Pongal preparations
at dinner.
The special Pongal lunch will
consist of pure vegetarian specialities to celebrate the true spirit of the
festival. Southern Aromas will be geared to enable guests indulge in the Special
Leaf Service on that day.
Sugarcane juice, the welcome
drink, is sure to bring a refreshing start to your special lunch. The festive
dishes will include varieties of pongal, authentic poriyals (curries to go with
your rice dish), an array of rice dishes and traditional desserts to wrap up
your Pongal lunch.
Chefs at Southern Aromas have
handpicked the ingredients and have dwelled over recipes to bring alive the real
tastes of the traditional dishes. You have a choice of Navratna Pongal (Pongal
with extra helping of fruits), Surya or White Pongal, Nei or Ghee Pongal and
some sweet preparations of this traditional dish.
Five varieties of rice dishes
like coconut rice, kadambam rice (rice cooked with a variety of vegetables and
exotic spices), pattani brinji (southern speciality ghee rice with green peas)
and Aha navrasu nadasal (rice with lentils and flavours of the festival).
Enjoy the variety rice with an
array of poriyals, like sweet potato poriyal or parangi poriyal (speciality dish
with pumpkin), Thiruvadairi koottu (flavours of south India blending with fresh
vegetables), to name a few.
Jack fruit payasam (dessert
prepared with sweetened milk and jack fruit), badam payasam and mukadal payasam
(vermicelli, rava and sweetened milk) and more are some of the recommendations
to complete the Pongal treat offered at the restaurant.
The Special Pongal Lunch at
Southern Aromas is priced at Rs 300 (including taxes) and is open from 12.30
p.m. to 3.30 p.m. on January 14.
And those who miss the Special
Lunch can savour the traditional Pongal dishes for dinner too. All guests will
be served varieties of pongal and payasam on the house if you step into Southern
Aromas for dinner.
