Here's how you can test the soil a cubit (18-22 inches) sized pit is dug inside the ground and the excavated earth is transferred back into the pit. If the pit overflows with excess earth by 1/10th of the volume, the soil is considered good. Alternatively, the pit is filled with water and if the water level decreases by 30% of the depth next day the soil is said to be good. But what constitutes an unsuitable plot? Low-lying land, sandy land, black cotton soil, locked land, marshy land, land with higher ground water levels, odd and shapeless land, triangular land, watery land, burial grounds, plots bound by roads subtending irregular angles are usually unfit for human habitation. Sites having their length and breadth ratio falling in the 3:2 ratio are very good.
Vaasthu insists on more open spaces in the East and North, and North East when compared to the West and South. No corners are to be left in a disconnected corner. In other words clear-cut open to sky areas have to be left open all round the buildings. It is good for air circulation if open to sky areas are left to the east, north and NE directions. Placement of windows: Corner windows: Vaasthu suggests avoiding window placements at junction of two walls. In the entrance area, however, there can be two windows placed on either side of the main door.
The placement of four doors in all the four directions of the house depending upon Vaasthu is meant to supply oxygen-filled air into the building and also to push it to the deep interiors for escaping out through the other doors. The placement of the main door varies from state to state. In Tamil Nadu, the ideal location is in the eastern wall followed by the northern wall. Suitable wood for construction: Only one type of wood is to be used for all the doors and windows. The sizes of the frames and dimensions of windows should be kept in even numbers. Unseasoned, half-burnt, used wood, second-hand doors and windows, termite-filled woods, wood from trees like Banyan and Tamarind should be avoided.
Heavy furniture should be placed along the western or southern walls, while the NE corners should always be kept vacant. Cots are required to be put parallel to west or south wall facilitating sighting the North or East directions. Wardrobes should be placed along the west or south walls facilitating shutter openings towards north or east. Kitchen layout: The kitchen should be placed exactly in the South East portion of the house. The cooking posture has to be pointing towards the east direction. There should a natural water point in the NE corner, preferably the water pumped from a bore well. It is better if the cooking slab is reddish or brownish in colour. Placement directions of rooms:
Vaasthu is basically a practical science, useful for the construction of healthy living spaces. These are some basic and important pointers to be kept in mind while constructing or redesigning a house. Alaphia Zoyab
