The Grass is Greener on the inside
Bring a bit of summer indoors. Plant ryegrass seed in attractive pots; in a few short days you'll see sprouts coming up. Give the grass a haircut when it gets too long and out of
shape.
Weaving a blanket
Trim a blanket with velvet ribbon for a touch of warmth. Using a craft needle or large safety pin, weave ribbon through a loose-woven blanket. Finish by tying the ends of the ribbon into a bow.
Place mat or ribbons
Perk up your tabletop by attaching two rows of ribbon or one stripe of rickrack along the short ends of place mats. Or fold wide ribbon over the edge to create a panel. Sew a border all the way around for a framed effect.
Fabulous fabric art
Display your favorite fabric swatches in simple painted frames on any tabletop. Purchase a wooden frame, discard the glass, and paint the frame with acrylic craft paint to match the fabric you will use. Let it dry thoroughly. Trim the swatch and a piece of cardboard to fit inside the frame. Attach the fabric to the cardboard with double-sided tape along the edges, and place in the frame. Arrange in a grouping of complementary fabrics.
Peg rack
Spray paint a wooden peg rack a bright colour, and hang it vertically on a wall to store scarfs, purses, or jewellery. This idea also works well in a child's room. It's great for baseball caps, belts, or even next day's clothes to be kept neatly.
Decorate pillows
Enhance your bed linens with a decorative pillow easily made from a king-size case and ribbon. Purchase a bolster pillow form from an upholstery fabric store. Simply insert the bolster form into the pillowcase, and tie in place with a complementary ribbon. You can easily change the colour to match your decor. Make several bolsters to add a sense of luxury to your bed.
Natural
headboard
Cut lengths of grapevine from your garden or purchase several wreaths from a crafts-supply store, and arrange them on the wall for a natural headboard. You could also secure the wreaths together with florist wire to create a layered effect, and then hang them on the wall with a nail.
Throw in the towel
Sew simple pillows from kitchen towels. Seam short ends together to create a tube. On the open ends, make six buttonholes - three on each side - and attach buttons to match up with holes. Insert a pillow form and button ends together.
Bowl of
balls
Round out a shelf or tabletop with decorative balls. Try these do-it-yourself ones made from plastic foam. Choose several shades of the same colour of tissue to give depth. Mix white craft glue and water to make a soupy consistency. Cut the tissue in small pieces; dip them in the glue mixture. Apply the wet tissue to the ball. Continue until the ball is covered.
Festive
bottle toppers
Crown distinctive bottles with these fun-to-make cork stoppers. Use craft paint or paint pens to decorate wooden knobs with whimsical swirls and polka dots; finish with a coat of clear varnish. String beads on copper or stainless steel wire, and attach wire to the knob by drilling a small hole in top of knob. Secure it with silicone adhesive and sealer. Drill a hole through the cork and knob, connecting the two with a dowel screw (threaded on both ends) and silicone adhesive and sealer.
