In the past few years the habit of exchanging gifts has become a highly
symbolic activity. The value and importance of the relationship is often related with the object or article that is offered as a gift. Much more than that, exchanging gifts has become the best indicator of trends in the world of fashion. The opening of Daniel Swarovski & Co.'s consumer goods division in Chennai seems to have infused more fashion and luxury in the gift-giving
activity and decorating one's home.
It is usual to buy items, which are of use in day to day life. But the Swarovski boutique provides a range of colourful objects, images and jewels made of crystal. These sets of consumer collectibles carry their logo, well known around the world. Hailing from the Austrian City of
Watten, Swarovski has progressed to become a household name since 1895.
Swarovski, as its brand name goes, has been in the business of producing crystal and crystalline products for more than a century. Since 1970, their collectable items are much sought after and considered as highly fashionable. They have been extending their tentacles into several major areas of fashion such as Interior designing,
architecture, fashion-designing, home decorations, etc. Many a fashion center in the world like Paris, Milan, London, New York, are places where Swarovski has carved its niche.
"The consumer's goods division in Chennai is the first step to introduce Swarovski to South India and I should say that people here have received the concept with enthusiasm," says Amar Agarwal, General Manager of Spa Agency India Ltd., the sole distributors of Swarovski products in India. He also acknowledged that the Chennai center is faring exceptionally well. He also points out that now the city is setting a trend in gift
articles and setting up of homes according to one's taste. Many a house
boasts of showcases in the living room decked with crystalline products.
On entering Swarovski boutique, one can find an entirely different range of products available for
gifts and home decor. Right from the crystal stones, there are crystal objects, fine carvings of animals and numerous varieties of jewels made in different colours, sizes and shapes. The collections make a rich feast to the eyes. The glittering crystals give a feeling of fantasy, best suited for people with a romantic feel.
Besides becoming a name for fashionable and luxurious collectible centers, Swarovski is poised to extend its services to textile designing in India. Elsewhere in the world are some of the big names in fashion designing, such as Paco Rabbanne, Vivienne, Westwood, Coco Channel, Tommy Hilfiger and Versace, etc. Amar Agarwal informs that the company is curious to work with Indian designers who bring with them a rich and vast cultural background that has the greatest significance to the consumers. "Swarovski realises the value of being traditional from its own history and being with Indian designers would add to the variety of Swarovski's product line," he says.
In future Swarovski also intends to introduce many of its successful products, such as the crystalline light-hangings or chandeliers into every fashionable household. Crystal zipper, one of the innovative product lines might take every Indian by surprise. For Swarovski, the 21st century fashion world truly belongs to crystals as raw materials. They feel that some of their rapidly developing groups of customers are in Chennai. Very soon, the city may also receive their optical lenses, binoculars and their grinding machines.
Indeed, the small and unassuming entrance to Swarovski could well be opening the city to a wider world of crystalline products thereby making it one of the centers of up-to-date fashion.
The price of the delicate products vary according to their size and shape
and are to be handled with care.
