Tastefully made delicate pieces of furniture are on display at Sabah Bakhache's showroom for interiors called 'Corniche'.
Located away from the city and far from the madding crowd (even though it's an unlikely place for a furniture showroom) in shops 1 to 7, at Aroras Plaza, on the East Coast Road at Akkarai, Injambakkam, it is exquisite
treasure trove of classy furniture. 'People don't pay enough attention to the fine art of choosing furniture,' rues Sabah -- a one-time fashion model, who flirted with event management and who is now passionate about interior decoration. She adds, 'Your bedposts and chairs are something you have to wake up to and live with all your life. Better exercise care now and feel good about it later.'
The well laid out showroom, displays an assortment of pieces like the carved rose wood finish large bed with two side tables, a chip'n'dale teak wood dining table set with upholstered chairs, a wrought iron dining table with chairs and a teakwood antique
almirah. A round mirror in teak frame hangs on the spotlessly white wall, apart from paintings and other dainty wall hangings. There are white and brown pots mounted on pedestals made out of Rajashthani marble called
'makarana', pillar pedestals for displaying flowers and a fruit bowl. Modern art marble figurines of black and white on pedestals add a touch of the avant-garde to an otherwise predominantly ethnic ambience of the showroom.
The portion of the showroom, that is bound to catch the eyes of all interior lovers, is the section that displays period furniture, pieces that are straight out of some coffee table glossy on Maharajahs. A weather beaten teakwood sofa with an engraved table top, box sofas with storage space beneath, a large wooden almirah and small shelves with engraved drawers and carpets, all add up to create a royal ambience of a bygone era. The piece-de-resistance is a sofa set with a matching table, carved out of an ancient teakwood bullock cart seat. Sabah Bakhache has created an arresting interior made up of a classy collection of furniture and décor items. The exclusive merchandise mostly sourced from Delhi do not come cheap. Sabah's clientele do not seem to mind, as she is catering to a niche market of furniture lovers who are as passionate about décor as she herself is!
