HIV: Siddha is immuno-restorative

Research has shown three Siddha drugs have immuno-restorative properties in HIV patients, according to doctors at the Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine (GHTM) Chennai, India’s largest AIDS care centre.

They say Siddha drugs - Rasagandhi Mezhugu, Amukkara Chooranam and Nellikkai Lehyam - were found to have immuno-restorative properties in HIV patients, in the research carried out in the hospital.

According to GHTM deputy superintendent S Rajasekaran, these are being used as staple drugs for HIV patients coming to its Tambaram Centre. Around 300 HIV patients visit the separate HIV outpatient department daily, he told a group of Bangalore-based journalists on a recent visit.

On any given day, there are over 300 patients taking inpatient treatment in eight exclusive HIV wards. But it was a matter of grave concern that there has been an increase in the number of admission of HIV children in the paediatric ward, Rajasekaran said.

The second international conference on HIV/AIDS was organised by the Christian AIDS/HIV National Alliance at Bangalore from April 16 to 18. The conference was on ‘avenues of hope’ the church’s journey towards effective prevention, care and support.

The conference aims at providing a platform for forging new links between organisations for strategic and collaborative efforts and strengthen the movement worldwide, specifically in India, South East Asia, Europe and Africa.

Proactive participation, practical responses and understanding of HIV/AIDS are expected to help countries to cope with the now almost epidemic onslaught of the HIV virus.
