Yoga

'A Healthy body is a guest chamber for the soul; a sick body is a prison'.

A few years back, women had a nonchalant attitude towards health and relegated physical exercises to the back ground. But now a resurgence is seen and most of the urban ladies are showing interest in learning Yoga and Meditation. This is indeed a healthy trend. Doubts have raised about this latest trend and the opinions are galore as to how attending Yoga classes have become the 'IN' thing like going for shopping, walking and beauty parlour. To understand more about this, we approached Govinda Sarma, an Yoga expert, who teaches Yoga mainly for ladies, he explained thus:

"In the olden days, ladies used to involve themselves in jobs such as grinding batter, cleaning vessels, washing clothes, cleaning the house etc., which kept them physically active. They were healthy and rarely complained of joint pain, back or neck pain. But now, women can avail themselves the facilities of Grinder, Washing Machine, Vaccum Cleaner etc., which makes their jobs easier but keeps them physically inactive. This leads them to innumerable pains and discomforts. To solve these problems, which have become inevitable, there is a solution. This solution lies in Yoga."

Yoga stretches the body limbs, makes it malleable and the body is synchronised to work as a whole. There is no monotony while learning exercises. Each person's problem is studied and exercises are taught accordingly. Govinda Sarma confidently says that one can see or feel the improvement within 4 or 5 days after beginning the course. Depending on the problems of each individual 20 or more classes are held. He says that one should practice it for atleast half an hour daily in the morning or evening. Women who complain of lack of time, can do minimum exercises while watching T.V or listening to music.Yoga is taught for the senior citizens also. They are taught according to their age and capacity.

In a house where both husband and wife have taken up jobs, mornings are always chaotic. The lady of the house is on her toes trying to finish work fast, eating frugally, tending to husband and children, office work - all lead to tension, tension......There is a saying that freedom cannot exist when the mind is in turmoil. The mind must be cleared of confusinf moods, worries and fears so that in the sky of mental calmness, the freed bird of paradise - the soul, can spread its wings over one's whole existence. To do so, Yoga and meditation are of immense help. Through thgis tension can be reduced and peace of mind attained. Not only that even memory power can be increased, he says authentically.

Yoga offers a solution and cure to numerable problems, like Asthma caused by allergy, kidney problems. cardiac problems, gynaec and problems related to sex. They are treated without any medicines, or side effects. Sarma says that allopathy can give only temporary relief and with side effects, while in Yoga, such problems do not exist. Two or three exercises are taught for one disease and sometimes a single exercise can cure two or three problems. A welcome package is teaching exercises for weight gain and weight loss. This is surely an added attraction.

When we met some of the ladies learning Yoga under the guidance of Sarma, they unanimously voted for Yoga - to overcome physical and mental problems.

Bhavani ( Patiala montessori school teacher )

"Visiting Gyms and working on treadmill gives only temporary relief. The pain comes back . Bit in Yoga there is surely relief for good. I am able to feel it. But I find the exercises, a little strenuous but if you are persistant you can obtain beat results. As far I am concerned, Yoga is the best choice.

Prema ( Telephones )

"I was suffering from Diabetes and after attending 25 classes i was completely cured. I can feel the change. I am still continuing my Yoga classes. Finding time is little difficult but as soon as I am back home i make it a point to do Yoga for atleast for an hour."

Uma ( Home maker )

"I feel relaxed both mentally and physically. I am able to maintain my body weight. I finish off all my house work by 5.30 and do yoga tilll 7o' clock. Yoga is a better choice compared to medicines. In our flat, twenty of us joined together and learnt which made it less costly."

"Prevention is always better than cure. To remain healthy, Yoga is the best solution", says Govinda Sarma. And one is sure to agree that it goes with the saying 'Health is Wealth'.
