Home Remedies - Part I

Shall we start the treatment from the head?

* Mrs Rathi Ramananda has a good solution to treat headaches at home: Make a paste of dried ginger (sukku) and apply it on your forehead for instant relief.

* She has a simple treatment for greying hair. Dry gooseberries (nellikkai) and powder it (can be done at the rice mill). Wash your hair with the powder or mix it with shikakai. Soak your hair for 10 minutes and see the results for yourself. Since gooseberries also have a cooling effect, it is good for your system.

With computers crowding our lives, we need to take good care of our eyes.

* Mrs Rathi Ramananda suggests that we prepare a wash at home for the eyes. Soak coriander seeds (dhaniya) or gooseberries (muzhu nellikkai) in clear water and wash the eyes with the water.

* Another simple remedy to cool burning eyes is to place nandhyavattai (white flowers used for pooja) flowers on your eyes.

* If dust falls into your eyes, don't rub. Just bat your eyelids about 25 times. The dirt will be out.

* Here is a suggestion to prevent the seasonal Madras Eye. She suggests that you cover your eyelids with coconut oil thrice a day to prevent the spread of the infection and to protect yourself.

Take good care of your precious eyes!

Earaches can be caused for a variety of reasons. Mrs Rathi Ramananda has a simple solution to ease this pain.

* Clean tulsi leaves carefully. Squeeze them to extract enough juice to fill a spoon. Heat the juice for a second and put three drops in the ear and lie down for about half-an-hour.

Works wonders, says her son.

* If you have a blister/boil on the ear, grind kadukkai (available in most Indian medicine shops) and apply it over it.
