Lightweight foot from ISRO technology
ISRO said the pact for the free transfer of technology would enable the Bhagwan Mahavir Vikalanga Sahayatha Samiti, Jaipur, to produce the polyurethane foot in large quantities for the benefit of the masses, especially for the poor and the needy amputees in the country.
"The new foot has a number of advantages over the traditional Jaipur foot, the main advantage being its light weight and durability," ISRO said.
ISRO said the development of integral skin polyurethane foam was initiated about a decade ago in consultation with Dr P K Sethi who, along with his co-workers, pioneered the ankle foot prostheses, popularly known as the Jaipur foot, amongst those who have lost their legs due to different reasons. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has signed a technology transfer agreement with a Jaipur-based social organisation for polyurethane foot technology developed by ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) at
Thiruvananthapuram.
The Bangalore-based space agency said in a statement that the polyurethane foot had been tested extensively in collaboration with the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, and several modifications and improvements incorporated based on the feedback by the amputees who had used the foot.
Polyurethane is one of the several composite materials that have been developed by VSSC and it is used as an ingredient to make rocket motors. This development has resulted in an important spin-off in the form of artificial foot prostheses and limbs for the disabled, it said.
