In a shocking incident, a 15-year-old boy,
the son of a doctor couple, performed a caesarean operation at a
maternity hospital run by them at Manapparai, near
Tiruchirapalli.
Watched by his parents, class-10 student
Dhileepan Raj was encouraged to perform the surgery for setting
a record, the boy's father, Dr Murugesan had told a recent
meeting of Indian Medical Association (IMA), and reportedly
showed a VCD to back his claim, said the secretary of the Tamil
Nadu chapter of the IMA, Dr Ravi Shankar.
Ravi Shankar said on receiving information
about the surgery, the association had sought an explanation. In
his reply, Murugesan said he had "encouraged" his son to perform
the surgery at the family-run Mathi Surgical and Maternity
Hospital.
"It is unethical and against the law and they
could be booked under provisions of the IPC for abetting his son
to perform an illegal act," Ravi Shankar said, adding that only
the state Medical Council could take any action against
Murugesan a Master of Surgery (MS), and his gynaecologist wife.
Ravi Shankar said he was collecting material
about the incident and would send his report to the council for
further action.
State IMA president, Dr Mohan Das, said, "We
strongly condemn it. Only the state medical council can
recommend cancellation of his membership."
The latest on the case is that an inquiry by
a revenue divisional officer (RDO) has been ordered into the
shocking incident.
District collector Ashish Vachhani, who
ordered the probe, said the RDO would be assisted by the Deputy
Director of Health Services and the Joint Director of Medical
Services.
The inquiry report was expected to be
submitted in three weeks' time, and based on it, necessary
action would be taken.
Attempts to contact Murugesan and his wife,
Dr Gandhimathy, proved futile. (Agencies)
