A Chennai hospital has introduced a
vacuum-assisted closure method, a healing therapy for diabetic
foot wounds being followed in the US.
This would be a remedy to the dreaded problem
of delayed healing of diabetic wounds, especially resulting from
foot complications which could even lead to amputation, said Dr
Vijay Viswanathan, managing director of M V Hospital for
Diabetes and Diabetes Research Centre, which introduced the
therapy.
Using the vacuum-assisted closure method, the
wound healing would be faster by at least 40 per cent, saving
hospitalisation cost and time.
Vacuum-assisted closure is an innovative
technology device specifically created and developed to treat a
variety of chronic and acute wounds, Vijay Viswanathan said,
adding the device was automated to control the delivery of
topical solutions such as cleansers, antibiotics, antifungal,
antiseptics and anaesthetics to the wound. (Agencies)
