We in India are not used to this idea of
earthquake or for that matter disaster preparedness. But now is the time for it.
In readiness for a quake - MUST:
- A
good strong torch with ready to use cells
- Candles and matches
- First Aid Kit, know where it is kept
- A reserve of eatables to sustain the entire
family at least for a day
- Drinking water
- Turn off gas, electricity and water
connections
- Remember or keep the telephone numbers of
the following services handy - Nearest major Hospital, Fire Station, Police
Station, Ambulance Service, Chemist, Electric substation, Water supply, etc.
During an Earthquake - if Indoors:
- If close to an exit, run out to an open
space at least 10-20 meters away to avoid collapsing walls and structures
- If cannot go outdoors, take cover under a
cot, table or a door frame or an archway
- Keep away from windows and balconies
- Do not use lifts and elevators
If
Outdoors:
- Keep away from tall structures, power lines,
and dangling electric wires
- If close to a tall building, seek refuge
under archways and doorways, these can offer protection from falling debris
- If driving, reach the shoulder of the road,
park and stay inside the car
- If it is urgent to drive be on the lookout
for falling debris, split roads, collapsing or weak bridges and flyovers.
After the Quake:
- Check the damages to utilities like gas,
electric and water connections; slight suspicion warrants turning them off.
- Don't light matches, cigarette lighters or
touch electric switches if a gas leakage is suspected.
- Get in touch with neighbours, they may need
help
After attending to the above immediate
tasks:
- Keep in touch with the outside world through
battery operated transistor radios.
- If possible provide any kind of emergency
support, work as a volunteer.
- Remember the Blood group. Donate blood.
- Do not use telephone unless it is an
emergency. Telephone exchanges become either in-operational or are jammed
due to heavy call traffic. Emergency services should get priority.
- Do
not re-enter damaged buildings, they may collapse anytime.
- Emergencies are not sight-seeing spots,
don't crowd around these spots, if possible help.
- Don't waste food and water, normal supplies
may take days to be restored.
- Don't venture out without adequate clothing
and footwear.
- Take care of those with physical
disabilities; follow instructions issued by the authorities.
