Sakkara Pongal?!

Are you one of those who laments that the 'modern' junk foods, Western, Chinese and North indian foods have invaded our culture and our traditional food habits are disappearing? Then there is very good news for you! There is a new restaurant, in Chennai, just for you, just to serve our traditional food items.

The new restaurant is named, well, Sakkara Pongal! A traditional dish on the occasion of 'Pongal' is available all days of the week. This restaurant serves all the other traditional dishes, as well.

When we ask Mr. Murali, one of the partners, on why this name, he smiles and says, "We knew we had to do something different, to get a standing in the market; hence the name. It isn't only the name that is different. Generally, our traditional food is cooked by our mothers, at home. In metros like Chennai, people living away from their parents, long for their 'mothers' special'. They wait for a holiday to go home to tuck into their favourites. This not necessary any more. No need to rush home! Walk into our restaurant and get all the traditional items at the right price," says Murali, his words filled with pride.

A marketing executive for many years, Murali, wanted to do something different and profitable. Thus was born Sakkara Pongal, on Jan.20th. One can get a number of traditional dishes like morkazhi, sundal, Kanchipuram idli, puttu, ukkarai, milk poori, aval uppuma, kozhukkattai - that are both tasty and healthy. These dishes are served during the 'Ethnic time' 4 to7 pm. Of course, (true to its name), sakkarai pongal is available all the time!

"Our motto is hygiene, taste and quality. The colour scheme we chose was white, to signify purity," says Murali. The restaurant accepts party orders and serves other varieties, too, in addition to the traditional dishes. The food here has a distinct taste!

How is the business doing, so far? "Since ours is one of a kind, customer support is good. Though I can't claim the response is overwhelming, we have a decent clientele. We have a number of repeat customers, regulars, which is a good sign. We ask for our customers' feedback and this helps us to understand them and serve them better. People come with their families, to Sakkara Pongal. Clientele is a mix of people from different walks of life - software, government servants..."

Murali says that though, initially, they advertised in neighbourhood newspapers, he is looking at 'word of mouth' publicity as the best advertisement. "Our goal is to execute the job on hand well. We are long-term players and we want to earn the customers' confidence and be known as a quality restaurant. We want to fulfill the dreams of those longing for our traditional dishes."

So, all you out there, what are you waiting for? Make a beeline to:
