Return of the Dragon

Golden Dragon, the heart of authentic Chinese cuisine in the city at the Taj Coromandel, has two novel and exciting dining packages for its guests. From December 9, 2002 the restaurant has unveiled two interesting dining concepts - ‘Hardy Express for lunch and ‘We are family’ for dinner.

Mr.P K Mohankumar, General Manager, Taj Coromandel remarks, “For over 25 years, the Golden Dragon has been a crowd-puller. From being the first Chinese restaurant to introduce the city to fine Schezwan cuisine, the Golden Dragon has earned a reputation for itself as a trendsetter in this niche segment. Besides the cuisine, the personalized services and the ambience here have made the restaurant hugely popular with the guests. In fact, based on the feedback that we received from our regular guests, we decided to offer the two new packages. We also undertook a comprehensive research on the spread and the prices. It is important to us that we offer our guests a value-for-money dining experience.”

An analysis of the feedback received from the regulars at the restaurant indicated that there was scope for two distinct packages for different client segments. A lunch package for people on the move who prefer an express meal and which is light on the stomach, and a dinner package for those looking for a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Hardy Express, derives form Chef Hardy Cheung, the mascot chef of the Golden Dragon. It is an express lunch primarily aimed at corporate executives, shoppers etc. It is based on the premise of a live, flexible and interactive selection that the guest can make in the restaurant. At the interactive salad bar, guests can choose from a wide range of vegetables and sauces. The dimsum counter, offers 16 different varieties of dimsums, both veg and non-veg, which are then steamed by the chef and brought to the guests in the dimsum trolley. A choice of veg and non-veg soups follow. The meal is finally rounded off with a serving of two grilled items. All this at a price of Rs.250/- (exclusive of taxes) per head.

'We are family' is a dining concept exclusively for dinner. Aimed at the family crowd and large groups looking for an elaborate dining experience, this concept features a fixed menu. The menu includes a choice of three veg and non-veg main course, rice/noodles and dessert. Priced competitively, a family of four including children under 10 years, can enjoy a meal for just Rs. 1100/-. The rates vary depending on the sizes of the groups. As the groups increase in size, the average per head decreases considerably.

Chef Hardy Cheung, regarded one of the best Chinese chefs in India, and Chef Rahul have created a new and exhaustive menu but not before they embarked on a thorough revisit of Chinese cuisine. After traveling extensively through Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu and Hong Kong, the chefs whipped up over 125 exotic Chinese delicacies. The raw materials used for these recipes are authentic and are imported from China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

According to Chef Hardy Cheung, “In order that the flavour of the recipe is retained, it is very important that the ingredients used are also original. We source all our raw materials from abroad. However, we also make sure that we customize some of the recipes to suit the Indian palette.”

Notable signature specialties in the new menu include Beijing Baked Prawns, Crispy Fried Chicken, Beer Steam Lobster, Mongolian Fried Rice, Orange Daar Saan, Lotus Root Roncin and Singapore Chilli Crab. The menu includes some sapo dishes. Interesting among them are the Schezwan Egg Plant with Pickled Chilly and Singapore Chilli Crab. Crispy Fried Bananas and Water Chestnut & Walnut Sweet Soup Date Wafer Cakes are the highlights in the desserts section. Besides, a choice of three teas - Green Tea, Jasmine Tea and Puli Tea is also offered to guests over lunch and dinner.
